Joan Doyle - Born in Ireland, into a large family, Joan was given a respect for the past by her father's deeply held regard for his ancestors and sacred places and people of his youth. From her mother she learned human kindness by example and that the virtues of spirit are more valuable than material things.
Roots are what nourish us as we seek the light and grow through new experiences! This is what Joan has done all her life, moving to Los Angeles at the age of 31. She traveled in Africa since then and climbed its highest peak Kilimanjaro. You can read that story in her book Spirit is Talking to You, which is a collection of 50 stories from a variety of people and backgrounds telling of how they connect with their version of God. She traveled around the world, via Thailand, India, Morocco, Spain, Portugal, England, Ireland and Canada. Joan completed three Marathons, Los Angeles, Dublin and San Diego, and loved to run and hike the local mountains. |
Joan is a lifelong artist who began her career as a graphic artist working for Kerry'e Eye Newspaper in Tralee and moved on to design board games in Kinsale, Co. Cork before joining Don Bluth Studios in Dublin. This move led to animating special effects for animated feature films and commercials for 20 years and allowed her to procure a job with Walt Disney Studios. Never without a sketchbook or a paintbrush Joan always worked on her skills. In 2005 she became a Spiritual guide through Center's for Spiritual Living after 5 years of study. Watercolors and Spirituality have always been Joan's greatest passions and she combines them in her Inspirational Art.
Joan's favorite things are laughter, nature and friends, as well as her husband Justin, www.theHumanMRI.com walking her dog Otis, spending time in Ireland with her ever growing family and having lively discussions with friends and new acquaintances on both sides of the Atlantic. |
How did you begin painting portraits of houses?
I began painting house portraits more than ten years ago as a response to the variety of houses and gardens I would see on my walks in my neighbourhood of Glendale, California. I would walk in the morning when its coolest and the world is waking up. It delights me to see how people keep their gardens and really take pride in their homes. I grew up in Ireland and lived in a terrace of houses that were all identical except for the color of paint and the landscaping so it is a real pleasure to see the diversity of architectural choices that are on display on my walks. Of course the California climate with the addition of a well-placed sprinkler is the perfect environment for all manner of plant and tree life. Add sunshine and the dappled shadows it creates and it is this artist's dream! With the personalities that exude from these homes, house portraits seemed the logical and intuitive thing for me to do. So I went out one day to take a photo of a house that appealed to me to do my first house portrait, and a man walked up to me and said "Are you the house artist?" And not really knowing what he was talking about I responded "Yes, I'm the house artist." And then and there my new career was born! |
It didn’t take long until I was providing Realtors with unique, colorful house portraits as memorable gifts for their clients. Once the House Artist's web site became a reality, I was getting orders from all over the United States for house portraits.
It gives me great pleasure to provide a house portrait for those that love and cherish their castles, their safe place to be, their childhood homestead or their first home as a married couple. It is my goal to create beauty and something that is a joy forever. A house portrait, a feature or angle, a favorite corner, a view from a window, a porch chair where the cat curls up, we all have those places that make us feel peaceful or calm. That's what I try to capture. |
